In the summertime, when the weather is high, communities across the world become restless hotspots for summer fun. Busy downtowns, warm beaches, and breezy hiking trails are just around the corner. We always look for a summer to remember, but what should we really be looking for this summer? SAFETY! Check out these cool safety tips to keep your summer sizzling.
Protect Your Largest Organ – Your Skin
While you’re enjoying having fun in the sun, it’s important that you focus on shielding your skin from the intense UV rays of the sun. Sun protection is essential to preventing premature aging and skin cancer. Here are some simple steps you can take to make sure your biggest organ stays healthy.
- Apply sunscreen daily – a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a SPF of 30 or above will do the job. Apply it generously to all exposed skin 15 to 30 minutes before going outdoors.
- Wear sun protection gear. Think a wide brimmed hat and UV blocking sunglasses
- Stay Hydrated – Protect yourself from the inside out!
Tearin’ Up the Town
Perhaps you have plans to meet friends downtown. Walk the parks, grab a coffee, shop the shops, hit every local antique store within a 50 mile radius. What’s important to remember is what is closest to you – literally.
- Always secure belongings like bags, keys, and wallets.
- Be aware of your surroundings.
- Lock up any vehicles, bikes, or other modes of personal transportation.
- Have a plan with friends or family if you’re separated.
- Stay hydrated!
Connecting with Nature
If you like to hike, picnic, or camp, outdoor safety will keep you and your loved ones having fun all summer long.
General Outdoors:
- Plan for changing weather.
- Avoid the sun at its peak hours.
- Recognize the signs of heat illness.
- Stay hydrated (again)!
While camping or hiking:
- Wear airy, loose fitting, light-color clothing.
- Pack a first aid kit.
- Share your plans with friends, family, or neighbors.
Catching Waves or Wakes
Whether it’s oceans with white sands or lakes with mushy gravel that is also technically sand, water is still water. Enjoy your time cooling off with these things in mind.
- Regularly use sunscreen and proper shade.
- Never dive head-first into any body of water.
- Don’t forget life jackets for any children or inexperienced swimmers.
- Always keep an eye on the people around you, in or out of the water
- Stay (you got it) hydrated!
We couldn’t possibly list ALL of the warm weather activities, but no matter what plans you have this summer, just remember: Listen to your body, trust your gut, and have fun! (and also everything we just listed above).
